We hear that people are getting bombed in Iraq, Sri Lanka, Pakistan...etc, and all we do is just say that there are so and so number of dead, and this many people injured. What does this tell people? People don't really react that much to numbers. I guess it's just a part of how humans think. However devastation becomes much more apparent if you attach a name, a picture, and a life behind each death. If we as a people do this, wouldn't it make people less likely to start wars, knowing that the person opposite of them are pretty much the same as them? Each of the presidential hopefuls keep thinking that people will vote for them because they are someone else. In the democratic side, the two front-runners are trying to portray themselves as Bill Clinton. Hillary, portraying herself as being with experience and being able to bring back the glory days of the Clinton years. Obama seems to be trying to portray himself as a new Bill Clinton, as the "new person." The republicans are worse, they've basically only come short of calling themselves the re-animated corpse of Ronald Reagan. And I'm not really sure of when they're gonna pass that line. Why don't these candidates campaign as themselves, rather than the re-incarnation of someone else?

Mystique of nature

"Everything changes, just some things faster than others"

When you were like.... 5 and you stared into the starry sky, didn't it hold such.... wonder? A place thought unattainable and then dream about. And then, compare that to now. True, it may still hold a capture over you. But it's not the same is it? You know what is out there. You know how it would look, and in many cases, what it's made of. By this, knowledge is a double-sided blade right? To know something that would make life a little less exciting. "Oh! there are tiny little lights in the sky!" to "Those are made up of hydrogen and helium in a constant..." In this case I guess knowing something makes it more... attainable, but also less amusing. I'm not saying knowledge is bad, but isn't it best to let a child dream about what lies beyond, rather than squashing their dreams before they can come into fruition? I know one thing. It is actually divisive enough that it coincides with party lines. Democrats who say that global warming is real, of human causation, and that we should try to stop it, on one side; And Republicans who say that man-made global warming is a hoax, or not all the details are in. Whatever the case, why is it that AMERICA of all nations should deny this? Deny something that the entire world has accepted. Humans are causing global warming, and why does it take a chorus of voices from the rest of the world to actually make America begin it's slow march to hopefully fixing global warming? I'll let that sink in for a moment. 2003, that was four years ago. However, this president seems to have been saying they have nuclear weapons, and we must stop them. Maybe the president really didn't know that they didn't stop their nuclear program, but wouldn't this also mean that Washington should have spent more time looking for the truth rather than continuing to blast Tehran for their "nuclear weapons" development even after broad skepticism by an international community, and the denial of Teheran's government? The Republicans are jumping ship faster than lemmings from an island. Now, even two republican senators are backing up the democratic position of pulling out of Iraq. Is it now that the Republicans are getting it? We were in Iraq for a false reason and was a completely illegal war. Now we are in this war that is a complete drain on our resources. By staying in there, we are making ourselves less safe by giving Al-Qaeda goal giving them a recruitment boom. Because of this they are up to pre- 9/11 strength. Not to mention it is practically making America bankrupt. It is time for congress to bring out troops home, not only because this war is making us less safe, but because this war is wrong. E. Lessing German Dramatist

September 11 2001 was one of the worst days this country has been through. That day thousands of people were killed for a reason most of us can not comprehend. Lives that could have changed the world for better were lost that one day. Now there are many more people that are suffering; the families of those from the incident itself, to those coping with the loss of their families in the current wars, and to those who were injured by these wars. During this 4th of July please pray for these people and actually the whole country in general. This is a time when the entire country and everyone in it needs a miracle the most. But also, when you do pray, pray for those terrorists, and their families. What kind of society would they have had to have lived in to allow for such a twisted version of life? From a religion that is supposed to preach kindness and peace. Pray for them that they will some day come out of this hatred of the west and bring back the true foundation of their own religion. I know this may be hard for many people and even though I have no power to force you, I can only ask that you will either think about it, or actually do it. For this single grateful thought is the most perfect prayer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=islGmlb24Aw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWyJJQbFago&mode=related&search=

Power corrupts

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it"
-William Pitt the Younger

Is this the type of presidency that we want? Is this the person we want as currently the most powerful person in the world? Is this the person we want as our leader, a person who has repeatedly shown complete an blatant disregard to the laws of this nation? Well currently we have this person in the white house. Bush has now disregarded a ruling from the court of appeals that says Scooter Libby should serve his prison sentence and has commuted his sentence. Anyone who thinks that this is just a partisan attempt to attack the white house is wrong. This is a republican prosecutor and a republican court that sentenced Scooter Libby to his 30 months of prison for obstruction of justice. Because of this Bush should also be charged with obstruction of justice and contempt of congress. Although this isn't illegal this is unethical and immoral because it gives Libby the security that he wouldn't need to reveal any information because Bush would pardon him. To say that your friends can't be touched by the law, this is the pinnacle of corruption, this coming from the pinnacle of power.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287790,00.html
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19570081/

Freedom of Press

"If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn't hesitate to choose the latter." -Thomas Jefferson

What were the Democrats in Congress doing when they were trying to get a fairness doctrine through? A fairness doctrine no matter how tempting it may sound with the current large amounts of conservative media is not a way to go. This basically is the same Constitution ignoring government you tried to get rid of when you came into office. Free speech should always be practiced regardless, even if almost all of it is against your view. The very foundation of this country included the freedom of speech and not as either democrats or republicans, but all Americans should be against the fairness doctrine regardless of the media's political views

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18366765/site/newsweek/

The True Democracy

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
-Winston Churchill

This saying by Winston Churchill was probably right. In this day and age almost everyone hates politics. Only about 5% of mothers actually want their children to become the president of the United States because a. our government is just blatantly corrupt, and b. the general populace no longer has much interest in politics. This country has an average voter turn out rate of about 45% and politics is almost a taboo subject in many places because no one even wants to talk about politics anymore. Without people to vote, the very foundations of an aristocracy will be formed. In which only a very small amount of people have the most power. In fact this is already starting. The current amount of money that candidates need to get into a presidential race is in the high millions. Many people don't have that kind of money to campaign so people can't run. This is a country in only the rich can be powerful, and the average voter is almost completely oblivious to the world outside their own bubble. Yes, maybe people will become fed up eventually like with the war in Iraq, but these were the same people that could have prevented this if they had been researching politics in the 2004 election. We need to reclaim our right to power. As the people of this democratic republic, we need to pay more attention to our national and international politics. If this occurs, we can be sure that a mistake like re-electing Bush will never be repeated.

The statistics of this post can be found in the book "Where Have All the Leaders Gone" by Lee Iococca

Our Future

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." -George Santayana

History can teach us many things. Some of these can be in the realm or medicine, philosophy, or even science. However history can also teach us many things about government, economics, and military.

One of these lessons would be for our leaders to be flexible and not be stubborn by pursuing one goal to its death and then keep pursuing it. Adolph Hitler had made this mistake in operation Barbarosa when he invaded Russia. He refused to make even a slight strategical retreat which lost him the battle of Stalingrad, and possibly even the war if looked at in a broader view. By being stubborn he allowed his starving, frost-bitten, ill-prepared troops to fight the near endless Russian forces at Stalingrad in the freezing cold. This probably cost him the entire war. This is a lesson that has been taught to practically every high schooler that has taken a history course. However it seems that this lesson has never reached the current administration. They seem to be hell-bent on trying to keep this strategy in Iraq even though it has been completely disastrous. We have been in Iraq longer than we were in World War II and we haven't been able to address ANY of the problems facing the Iraqis when we got there. In fact, some of these problems may have been intensified because of our presence. By us staying in Iraq we are blatantly disregarding the wishes of the people of America and even the people of Iraq. We have to know when to hold and keep going, but we also have to know when fold and leave.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/26/AR2006092601721.html

By leaving now we can salvage whatever respect we have left with the rest of the world. We need to leave now. The pros of leaving easily outweigh the cons in this matter. First of all, we actually invaded Iraq on false pretenses, and no we are staying there with no end is sight. This probably makes America look arrogant causing other nations to dislike and despise America. Another thing people try to say will happen is that we will be less safe. We are actually making ourselves less safe by staying in Iraq. We are giving the terrorist organizations a common enemy by staying in Iraq. This compounded with the fact that we are actually killing them gives people that haven't joined them yet a reason to. Not to mention we have been throwing money at this problem for years, and we are now in the largest debt and deficit we have ever known. If we left, we would actually have a surplus and we would be able to have enough money to help maintain our safety in our own country.

To anyone who disagrees with me, why should we stay in Iraq? But before you tell me, ask yourself this, its it worth it to stay in this "quagmire" in Iraq and sacrifice the middle class of this country while we're at it? Not to mention those troops we are sending into Iraq? The money we save from Iraq could help the people in our own country. We should help our own country live without being on life support before we try and fix other people's countries.
